2008 BMW Key Fob It is normally possible to determine electronically the last time master keys were used. The vehicle order is stored in the keys via the CAS. This describes the model, national version, and items of optional equipment. Also stored are the vehicle identification number, odometer reading and data for condition-based service called CBS. The vehicle identification number and odometer are used to prevent manipulation. The CBS data is updated into the vehicle key or remote control unit within a driving cycle. A driving cycle is defined by a speed of about 30 mph at least once and one below 20 mph the data is updated again, when a distance driven exceeds 6 miles and speed of 30 mph at least once and speed one below 19 mph.The inability to read information may also be a problem in the dealer’s key reader. This was eliminated because the keys were read by two different dealers. The inability to read the key is also associated with power loss from not being in regular use. The key is powered when it is inserted into the ignition lock. Some use data such as the vehicle identification number remains but short-term data such as last time used will not register. The information displayed, is known to be correct and cannot be altered. These keys are dealer only with no aftermarket keys available. Two master keys that contain data were supplied with this vehicle at the time of manufacture. There is no way to enter or tow this vehicle without a key or keyless remote that will not trigger the alarm connected to the central locking system. EWS TRANSPONDER IMMOBILIZER SYSTEMThe CAS holds the rolling code for the electronic immobilizer, EWS. This rolling code is transferred between the CAS and the DME control unit. The DME control unit or the DDE control unit does not enable the ignition or fuel injection until a valid rolling code from an authorized ignition key is detected. The starting procedure begins when the key is inserted into the ignition. The vehicle is also equipped with an electric steering column lock, which is controlled through the CAS.An unauthorized key or no key, the steering wheel will remain locked and the vehicle cannot be steered. First after last operation and receiving the proper code, the CAS switches the electronic steering wheel lock on. The vehicle’s condition and status of the electronic steering lock are then checked. Finally, the encoded signal is sent to release the lock. Once it has received a valid authorization, the electronic steering lock initiates the unlocking procedure. The electronic steering lock drive is actuated to unlock. CENTRAL LOCKING SYSTEMThe CAS control unit is also the master control for the Central Locking System. Depending on the control request, the CAS decides whether the central locking, should be unlocked, locked or deadlocked. The central locking system for the front doors is controlled by the door modules. The central locking for the rear doors, tailgate rear window and fuel filler cap are actuated by the body basic module. The CAS is also the master control unit of the power widows. The car windows in the front doors are actuated by the door modules. The car windows for the rear doors are actuated by the body basic module. Force or by-pass to any door or window will prevent the vehicle from being started and driven. The antitheft alarm system installed in this vehicle is called DWA. It detects and reports attempts of intrusion and tampering with the vehicle. It includes a tilt alarm sensor that prevents towing, and software that is integrated into the emergency power siren. The alarm is triggered when there is any unauthorized lifting or attempts to tow the vehicle. The vehicle interior is monitored by microwave sensors. They are installed in hidden locations. The interior monitoring function works, even when the side windows are open. The DWA control unit is located in the emergency power siren and connected to the microwave sensors. When the deck lid lock is mechanically unlocked, the DWA alarm is triggered. If an attempt is made to break into the vehicle or to enter the interior, the DWA alarm is triggered. The alarm gives both acoustic and visual warnings. It is not possible to start and drive this vehicle without a properly programmed key fob.
